Teacher CV template

Teaching applications are read by heads and hiring panels who value substance presented formally: qualifications easy to verify, classroom experience with real outcomes, and evidence you contribute beyond your own classroom. This template presents exactly that, in a classic layout that reads as professional in any staffroom.

Classic's centered headings and formal single column match the register school leadership expects from an application. It also parses cleanly in the recruitment portals used by school trusts and districts.

What school leaders scan for first

Panels shortlisting teachers verify three things before reading anything else: qualified status (QTS, state certification, or equivalent), subject and age range, and current safeguarding training. Put these in a clearly labeled qualifications block near the top, with dates. Making a panel hunt for your certification is the most common self-inflicted wound in teaching applications.

After eligibility, they look for trajectory: responsibilities beyond the classroom (form tutor, subject coordination, a club, a working group), because those signal the future middle leader every school is quietly recruiting for.

Evidence over adjectives: writing classroom impact

"Passionate educator committed to every child's potential" appears in nearly every teaching CV and therefore says nothing. Evidence does: value-added results, progress data for your classes, attendance improvements in your form group, intervention groups that closed gaps, moderated coursework outcomes. "Year 11 class exceeded target grades by an average of half a grade against similar prior attainment" is the sentence panels remember.

Where data is limited (early career, or subjects without exam classes), use observed practice and adopted work: a scheme of work now used by the department, resources shared across the trust, an observed lesson rated highly, a behavior strategy that measurably reduced removals.

Beyond the classroom: the section that wins interviews

Schools hire whole colleagues, not just lesson deliverers. Give co-curricular and pastoral contributions their own bullets: clubs run, trips led, parents' evenings and transition events, mentoring of trainees, duty rotas, community links. Two or three concrete lines here often separate shortlisted candidates from equally qualified ones.

Professional development belongs here too, selectively: training that changed your practice (phonics, SEND, exam-board marking) rather than a full course inventory. Exam-board marking experience in particular is undervalued by candidates and highly rated by heads of department.

Early-career teachers and career changers

Early-career teachers should structure placements like roles: school, age range, classes taught, one outcome or contribution per placement. Career changers into teaching should compress the prior career into a few lines that name the transferable evidence (presenting, managing groups, subject expertise) and let training placements lead. In both cases, one page is enough; a two-page CV of thin material reads worse than a dense single page.

Example teacher summary

Secondary English teacher with 5 years of experience across Key Stages 3 to 5, currently Key Stage 4 coordinator. Year 11 classes have exceeded target grades in each of the last three years, and the reading intervention I lead lifted struggling readers an average of 14 months in reading age. Form tutor, debate club founder, and mentor to two trainee teachers.

Example achievement bullets

  • Year 11 English classes exceeded target grades by an average of half a grade in each of the last three years
  • Designed and lead the whole-school reading intervention; participants gained an average of 14 months in reading age over one year
  • Coordinate Key Stage 4 English across a 6-teacher department, including moderation, mock analysis and intervention planning
  • Founded the debate club (40+ members); teams reached the regional final in consecutive years
  • Mentored two trainee teachers through placements; both passed with strong observation grades and secured permanent posts

Adapt the numbers and systems to your own work — never copy a claim that isn't true of you. The structure is the part worth stealing.

Questions, answered

How long should a teacher CV be?
Two pages is the accepted maximum, one page for early-career teachers. Many schools also require their own application form; keep the CV consistent with it, because panels do cross-check dates and claims between the two.
Should I include my degree classification and QTS date?
Yes, both, with institutions and dates: panels must verify qualified status, and making it effortless works in your favor. Include your safeguarding training date too; it signals you know what matters in a school before anyone asks.
How do I show teaching impact without exam classes?
Use progress data within your key stage, reading-age gains, observed lesson feedback, resources or schemes adopted by colleagues, and pastoral measures like form-group attendance. Panels don't expect exam results from everyone; they expect evidence you measure and improve something.
What should an ECT / NQT CV lead with?
Training placements, structured like roles: school context, key stages and classes taught, plus one concrete outcome or contribution each. Then qualifications, then any school-adjacent experience (tutoring, camps, TA work). Panels hiring early-career teachers read placements as your track record.
Do teaching CVs need to mention safeguarding?
A single line with your most recent training date is enough, but include it. Safeguarding is a statutory duty, shortlisting panels look for it, and its absence is the kind of small gap that separates otherwise equal applications.
